Event Video Production Options

If you’re thinking about producing a video for your upcoming event, there are a few things you’ll have to think about and some options to consider. The explanations below will be especially helpful if you have not done event video production in the past.

Multi-camera vs Single Camera

For most events and budgets, we highly recommend having multiple cameras covering your event. A multi-camera shoot uses two or more cameras, with two or more camera operators. This is how most news programs, and some sitcoms are shot.

Having multiple cameras allows you to capture both the details and the big picture, and gives the editor a lot more flexibility to tell a good visual story. For example they can jump from a close up, to a big audience shot, and then show the contents on screen. If you have more than one person on stage, multi-camera setups can capture close ups and reactions, making your event production video much more exciting to watch.

Single camera setups can still work, but they are typically less dynamic. They are a single perspective showing the presenter and background, but limited options for close ups, wide shots, and movement. And if you have more than one person speaking, it will be hard to focus your attention on one and then the other.

Think about the difference between a simple, single camera university lecture video, vs a dynamic news show or conference with a perspective that shifts, zooms, and cuts between multiple participants. Which do you think makes for a more engaging video?

Multi-camera setups typically have the following options:

Camera A: Close Up

A high quality camera that focuses on the person speaking. Capturing their expressions, gestures, and reactions. This camera will typically move around to follow the action, zoom in closer, and even zoom out on occasion.

Camera B: Wide Angle

A more distant shot that shows the participant as well as the whole stage. This shows the materials being presented on screen, the presenter’s entire body, chair, and podium, and maybe even a little bit of the audience. This camera might move about the room, but doesn’t have to. An editor from Indigo Productions can cut from Camera A to Camera B in order to remove sentences or sections, and keep the video moving forward. It’ll look smooth, as if it’s happening in real time.

Camera C: Medium

Having a third angle makes videos even more exciting, and gives the editor some additional options to keep things moving. A medium shot will show the presenter’s full body as they move about the stage. You can imagine the shots changing from a close up on the presenters face as they make a point, then a wide shot showing the slide on the big screen, and then a medium shot as the presenter walks across the stage with the camera following them. Camera A, to Camera B, to Camera C!

Some other camera options

Audience reactions

Add some additional cameras and operators to show the crowd and individual reactions. These are popular in awards shows when they cut back to show an audience member laughing at a joke, applauding, or interacting.

Steadicam

A high quality camera mounted on a stabilized rig that can be carried by a camera operator. This is for moving, dynamic shots that follow action throughout the room. You see these on competition shows on major networks.

Backstage or behind the scenes

An additional camera with sound to capture all the work that goes into making your event a success. You can capture interviews with speakers and participants as they carry out their business, capture the feelings and reactions of audience members as they enter or exit the room, or even show off the other cameras present at the event.

Sound options

George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, once said that sound is 50% of the moviegoing experience. At Indigo Productions we tend to agree!

Clear dialogue, high energy music, and a good quality sound mix will do wonders for your event production video. Depending on your event setup, we’ll make recommendations on how to best capture sound.

Record from the soundboard

If you are running a serious event with professional audio, multiple microphones, and sound queues, it’s pretty easy to record all of your audio from the main soundboard. This requires a couple sound technicians to set up and monitor, and allows the Indigo team to capture and monitor each voice, each sound effect, and each video separately. We can use these elements to create a professional mix during the edit.

Production sound

If your event doesn’t have a professional sound setup, we’ll record audio in the same way that we would for a commercial or TV show. Each participant will be recorded with a lavalier microphone, with additional microphones being placed in the room to capture audience sound, questions from the room, and more.

Our team will work in parallel with the event organizers to ensure the best quality event production video sound, without disrupting the experience at your event.
